TO A LITTLE GIRL

Junior Kindergarten There was a little girl
Who looked at the world
Through four year old eyes.

Everything was so exciting
And so very interesting
She wanted to do it all,
Even after many no's
She still remained undeterred
Steadfast in her conviction
She learned as she always had
From the moment she
Breathed her first breath
Crawled her first crawl
And stepped her first step.

Her mother marvelled at
Her tenacity and encouraged her
To try new things,
Whenever the little girl decided
That was what she needed to do
Even if it was only once.

One day the four year old
Stepped into the schoolyard
Filled with summer's fallen leaves
Brightly leading her forward
Into a doorway
Mom and daughter wept
As always is the case
When babies grow into children
Within the blinking of an eye.
Then the little girl cried
Mommy please don't go
And mommy saw her baby cry
Her very last baby tears
Then shook her head and said,
I'm sorry, but it's time.

The little girl loved her school
And learning to print letters
And making new friends
But every now and then
A little voice would say
Mommy please don't go
To work today
And mommy heard her own voice
Plead from long ago and far away
She wanted her mommy
To stay home just for today
And her mommy reply
I'm sorry dear,
I have to go
I have to go.

One day the daughter said
I have to go,
I have to go.

Just for a moment
The mommy's heart
Could hear the four year old
Whisper from far away
I have to go,
I have to go.

So as she tucks her daughter into bed
She holds her for a fleeting minute and says

No matter where I am
Or where you are
I'm with you always
Little one
Especially
When we
Have to go.
